Abstract
Factors affecting the pre-penetration, penetration, post-penetration, pustule development and spore production stages of the growth of Puccinia hordei on barley were studied, with the object of elucidating the mechanisms controlling competition between physiologic races of the pathogen. The rates of spore germination, appressorium formation and penetration were affected differentially by temperature in different races and on different hosts. After application of a heavy inoculum, the race germinating rapidly under the prevailing environmental conditions predominated, possibly due to succeeding in competition for stomatal entry. When the inoculum level was low, the race with the higher spore viability, the greatest pustule size and the higher spore production per pustule predominated.
